Solid Stress Metric

Runs its own static analysis of a Solid and measures its typical surface stress: the level 99 % of the Solid's surface stays at or below, by area, leaving out the surface within two result cells of a Support's faces. It is not the peak: peaks at sharp inner corners are not settled by any solver. Also exposes #stress_field for colouring, drawn up to the typical surface stress with the cells next to the Supports striped, and #surface_stress, #mean (mean cell stress) and #pnorm (grading stress, a p-norm of the cells): levels of the result cells to grade a field by, not the Solid's stress figure.

Inputs

Solid Solid

The Solid to analyze.

Takes: any block that gives Solid (102 blocks)
Material Material

Material the Solid is made of, usually a Material.

Takes: Material
Load case Load Case

Loads and supports, placed in the Solid's own coordinates.

Takes: Load Case
Shell Yes/No

For thin-walled Solids: raises the element order through the wall so a wall resolves in about one cut cell instead of three. Needs quadratic order and is ignored with linear. Worth it for walls around 1 mm thick; tiny cut cells are merged into neighbours so they do not spoil the stress.

Advanced (7)
Resolution Number

Target number of finite elements (1,000–2,000,000); the element size is searched to reach it. Used while By cell size is off. Inside an optimization loop a fixed cell size is faster, since it skips that search for every candidate.

By cell size Yes/No

Off (default): Resolution sets the element count. On: Cell size sets the element size directly and Resolution is ignored.

Cell size Number

Element size at the surface in mm, used while By cell size is on. The mesh follows the exact Solid, not a sampled copy.

Support radius Number

Radius (mm) of the patch of nodes held around each support point, so a support does not show up as a stress spike at a single node.

Stress p-norm Number

The exponent of the grading stress #pnorm: the higher, the nearer it comes to its cap, the 95th percentile of the cells, and the more it reacts to local spikes; 4 to 8 is common.

Order Choice

Element order. linear (default) wants about three cells across a wall; quadratic reaches the same accuracy with far fewer cells, which suits thin shells and beam-like parts in bending.

Solver Choice

Equation solver. default picks one by element order and model size; direct is robust but needs much memory; iterative needs less, for fine meshes or quadratic elements.

Properties

Values the block gives besides its output. The editor lists them under Properties, and an input can read one by reference.

StressField Number · MPa

Von Mises stress at every point of the Solid, ready to drape; 0 outside the material.

SurfaceStress Number · MPa

Typical surface stress (99 % of the surface stays under this): the level 99 % of the Solid's surface stays at or below, by area, the surface within two result cells of a Support's faces left out. Not the peak: peaks at sharp inner corners are not settled by any solver. Not given where no surface lies away from the Supports.

Mean cell stress Number · MPa

Mean cell stress: the average von Mises stress over the material's result cells, by count. Not the Solid's stress figure: that is SurfaceStress.

Grading stress (p-norm) Number · MPa

Grading stress (p-norm): a p-norm of the von Mises stress over the material's result cells, each capped at the 95th percentile of them first (the Stress p-norm input is its exponent), so never above that percentile — a smooth level to grade a field by. Not the Solid's stress figure: that is SurfaceStress.
